The P-CSCF serves as the initial point of contact for the subscribers to the IMS network. It performs key functions such as proxying of the SIP messages from the subscriber to the IMS network, establishing IPSEC tunnels between the subscriber equipment and IMS network and the protection of the IMS core against SIP message floods. Since the P-CSCF acts as a conduit for the user interaction with the IMS core, the ability of the IMS core to provide IMS services such as Presence, Voice Calls, IP Centrex service and Conference services can be negatively impacted by the P-CSCF. Therefore exhaustive testing of the P-CSCF is necessary to ensure a reliable IMS network that will be able to provide top grade quality of service for the various IMS services.
